Panerai Luminor 1950 Equation of Time Tourbillon Titanio L'Astronomo

To pay tribute to the genius Galileo Galilei, Officine Panerai launched Luminor 1950 Equation of Time Tourbillon Titanio L’Astronomo. This 50 mm watch is a perfect combination of some of the most exclusive, rarest and fascinating specialities in Panerai watch-making. It is only limited introduced 30 pieces.

So far, the Luminor 1950 Equation of Time Tourbillon Titanio L’Astronomo PAM 365 is the most technically sophisticated watch model Officine Panerai has ever made. Its techniques include a tourbillon with equation of time, indication of sunrise and sunset times for the city chosen by the purchaser and depiction of the night sky of the same city on the back plate. With such unique and complex functions, the Panerai PAM 365 is a real masterpiece. And these functions are immediate and clear on the dial. People can see a date window at 3 o’clock, alongside a tiny dial that shows the month with a hand; equation of time; sunset time; sunrise time and finally small seconds at 9 o’clock, where the rotation of the tourbillon with a tiny ecru disc is visible through a small dial. The dial, of course, features classic Panerai sandwich structure. The luminescent substance inserted between the two layers gives exceptional night-time visibility. Times for sunrise and sunset are shown by two cursors that run along numbered circular sectors and vary depending not only on the seasons but also on the latitude chosen by the purchaser.

PAM 365 Power Reserve Display

Equation of time is universally adopted for ease and real or solar time which varies every day due to the eccentricity of the Earth’s orbit and the inclination of its axis. It is the very reason why equation of time has difference between the time shown by the watch. The linear cursor at 6 o’clock immediately shows this time difference and this calculation is a speciality of top-end watchmaking and a feature that very few watches have.

PAM 365 Case Back

The case back of Panerai Luminor 1950 Equation of Time Tourbillon Titanio L’Astronomo PAM 365 protected by a transparent sapphire crystal. And the other indications can be seen through the sapphire glass. Panerai PAM 365 was equipped with its in-house P.2005/G calibre manual-wound movement based on the Officine Panerai P.2005 in-house calibre. The P.2005/G calibre includes 375 components and features a typical Panerai tourbillon regulator, turning on an axis perpendicular to the axis of the balance and making two rotations a minute, instead of one. This watch offers 4 days power reserve thanks to its three spring barrels. Except for these features, you can also admire the map of the sky on the lower part of the mechanism. This is the most fascinating element of this watch. Depending on the hemisphere chosen, the disc that shows the map rotates in one direction or the other. In this way, it constantly updates the night sky above the city chosen by the purchaser. The name of the city is also engraved on the back, together with the millesimation.

The 50 mm case of Luminor 1950 Equation of Time Tourbillon Titanio L’Astronomo is made of titanium or pink gold. It also has a fine water resistant property. It is waterproof to 10 bar (about 100 metres). The crown is Panerai trademark crown-protecting bridge. The PAM 365 is teamed with alligator strap and the classic buckle customised with the Officine Panerai logo.

About Vintage, Pre-V and Pre-A

Europe is the paradise to look for Vintage Panerai watches, basically you can find the model in need, but the price is a little higher. Many newbies in some watch forums are confused when people discussing Pre-V and Vintage, here is some material about Vintage, Pre-V and Pre-A.

First you must get an understanding of their concepts.

1, Vintage can not be counted as antiques, antiques must be delicate collection. So we shouldn’t blindly worship the Vintage. For Panerai, Vintage is basically considered as those Panerai watches that were produced between 1930 and 1956(Big Egiziano).

2, Pre-V: those Panerai watches that were produced between 1993 ad 1997 are called Pre-V.

3, Pre-A: in order to draw the attention from market and media, Panerai published a small number of watches in 1997 and 1998, they were know as Pre-A. One method to distinguish Pre-A and A-series: all A-series are T Dial, below 6 o’clock, there are words “T SWISS T”; all Pre-A are T Dial, there are words “T-SWISS-T” at 6 o’clock.

First, let’s talk about Vintage, for the popularity of Panerai, the price of Vintage is definitely superior.

Trittico

The picture is a group of tools which Panerai made for the Italian Navy in the World War II, including 6152/1(the middle, used Rolex movement), compass(right) and a depth gauge(left), this set was called “Trittico”.

47mm Radiomir Watches

Between 1930 and 1980, Panerai produced 47mm Radiomir watches that used Rolex movement.

The pictures above are two Vintage Panerai watches, the left is 2533, made about 1936. The right one is 3646, which was produced between 1938 and the 1950s, it was once supplied to the German forces. The dial is very special, no “Luminor” or “Radiomir”. It was said that 2533 was only produced for one piece, and is still in the possession of someone, you can’t assess its value.

Radiomir 21 and 3646

21, the re-edition that was published in 1997, its prototype is 3646.

6152-1

6152-1 Case Back

The pictures above describe 6152/1. At the request of the Italian Navy, Panerai developed a type of case that was made of one whole piece of steel, case numbers were 6152, 6152/1 and 6154, and equipped with Angelus Cal.240 movement that had 8-day power reserve, the case was made by Rolex. 6152/1 was the prototype of PAM 127.

6154

The picture above is 6154. 6154 was specially made for the Egyptian Navy in 1954, its case has a little difference with 6152 and 6152/1, is called “Small Egiziano”.

Big Egiziano

In 1956, Panerai made a watch that featured a brand-new case with crown bridge, it was called GPF 2/56(the “Big Egiziano“), it was actually the prototype of 341. In a word, all products made by Panerai before its opening to the civilian market in 1993 were Vintage.

After Vintage, let’s talk about Pre-V. Between 1993 and 1997, also before the purchase by Richemont Group, Panerai totally published 12 watches, which were called Pre-V.

The third part is about Pre-A.

As you know, the Richemont Group bought Panerai in 1997, Panerai started to launch A-series watches in 1998. But in 1997 and 1998, to draw the attention of the media, the Richemont Group produced a few models, which were called Pre-A, they were basically sold in Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Mechanical model and exhibits can be directly manipulated by the user, explaining the universe architecture and science movement of Galileo by interactive touch screen. Creating a sophisticated instrument through his idea, converting the old mechanical clock into reliable measurement tool. With these innovative solutions, Galileo hoped to eventually solve the problem that it was difficult to determine longitude at sea.

Panerai Jupiterium

To commemorate the contribution of Galileo to modern watches, Officine Panerai provided an important support to the interactive area and donated the Jupiterium to the Galileo Museum. Jupiterium is a special planetarium clock with perpetual calendar, showing the trajectory of Jupiter and the locations of its four satellites. Taking Earth as the observation point, the Jupiterium can accurately show the location of the moon, the sun, Jupiter and the four satellites which Galileo discovered.

“We have always kept a fruitful long-term partnership with Officine Panerai.”, professor Paolo Galluzzi said, who is the director of the Galileo Museum. Galileo Museum opened a brand-new area, showing the outstanding achievements of Galileo through fascinating exhibits and interactive mode. His achievements have not only revolutionized the understanding of cosmic structure and movement, but also significantly improved time measurement mechanical system. Jupiterium has extraordianry mechanical complexity and accuracy, it was designed and produced by Officine Panerai, then being donated to the Galileo Museum.

A Complete Review of Panerai Radiomir

At the end of the 1930s, Panerai began to engage in watch-making, adhering the innovative spirit that made military precision instruments for Italian Royal Navy, Panerai created the “Luminous Diving Watch”, which was specifically designed for the first frogman force. Duarable, waterproof and maintaining high readability in any case were Italian Navy’s requirements in quality. In 1938, Panerai designed the first prototype, it featured large cushion-shaped case(diameter was 47mm), metal “Wire Lugs” were welded to the middle part of case, screw-in case back and crown. Self-winding movement with 16 ligne(slightly larger than 36mm), this was the classic size of pocket watch. Movement, case back and crown were all marked with “Rolex” logo, which witnessed the valuable partnership between Panerai and the brand located in Geneva. The outstanding design, including the Perspex that had high transparency and excellent acid resistance; the dial had lunimous hour markers, Arabic and Roman numerals; genuine leather strap was waterproof and it was long enough for rangers to wear the watch outside the diving suit.

Radiomir Watch in 1938

Radiomir Watch in 1938

From prototype to a small production, the case of this model, especially the dial have been vastly improved. The testing result of prototype revealed that the major flaw of this watch was hard to read time. Thus, the new model used sandwich structure, at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock of the top black layer, there were perforations of markersa and Arabic numbers, the disk below the top black dial were engraved with hour markers and covered with a high intensity radioactive material, and the brightness fully meet the needs of raid, so this model was named with this material Radiomir, to highlight this design. The inspiration of Radiomir came from the Panerai reserchers who developed luminous coating, the ingredients included zinc sulphide, radium bromide(that was extract out of radium) and thorium.

Radiomir Ref.3646

Radiomir Ref.3646

These early models had more than 60-year history since their birth, during this period, we witnessed the great progress in watchmaking and science technology. Panerai developed new case and better waterproof technology, for example: the Crown Guard with the lever(Panerai patented), used to lock crown tightly. The radioactive Radiomir(Panerai patented) was taken place by Luminor, which was modulated by the tritium. The new developed Super Luminova was also used in the latest models.

In the 1990s, Panerai started another pioneering work. Those precision instruments, which were originally supplied to Italian Navy, became the dream watches for mechanical watch enthusiasts. The size and appearance of these vintage watches were well-designed and kept the traditional design concept. However, the thing wouldn’t never change was the insistence on prodiving good quality watches. The Radiomir and Luminor, which were on behalf of the past glory achievements, have become two basic models that led the new trend of sports watches. Radiomir series inherited the appearance of the first Radiomir watch in 1938 and has become more and more perfect since 1997, Radiomir watches equipped with complicated movements and were positioned as Chronograph timepieces. Panerai also released a few Radiomir models that equipped with vintage movements, they were worth collecting.

Luminor 6152/1 That Equipped with Angelus 8 Days Movement

Radiomir shown ultimate style in 2004 and launched three new models for watch fans in that year, Radiomir 45mm Black Seal, Radiomir 8 Days Power Reserve and Radiomir GMT. These watches had special design and provided excellent performance for daily use. They belonged to PANERAI CONTEMPORARY and highlighted various outstanding models and the desire that Panerai wanted to add additional value on them since its establishment. In these new models, only Radiomir 8 Days purely expressed the watch-making emotion of Panerai, the movement it used had 8 days power reserve, which was the same as the revolutionary Angelus movement in the 1940s.

Radiomir 8 Days

Black Seal 8 Days Rose Gold

Black Seal 8 Days Rose Gold

Radiomir series shown superior design in 8 Days, the adoption of innovative movement once again reflected a firm idea that Panerai has always insisted on using advanced watch-making technology to pursuit practical performance. This watch restored the previous device developed by Panerai – manual winding 8 days power reserve movement, but modern “regulator” attribut was added on it. Panerai adopted Angelus movement in the 1940s, but the movement of the new Radiomir 8 Days watch was base on Jaeger-LeCoultre movement.

Manufacturing Radiomir 8 Days involed a lot of elements, was quite complex. The case was 45mm in diameter and composed of three parts, the “wire lugs” were panerai patented, they could provide high durability and stability. The arc-shaped case and rounded bezel needed multi-channel process to built, only the most skilled watchmaster could be competent to do this work, because any minor mistake during the polishing process would cause irreparable damage to the pleasing rounded bezel.

Screw-down case back and crown were waterproof to 100 metres, for this elegant and sports watch, the superior waterproof performance was very important. Leather strap highlighted the distinctive style, oversized trapezoidal buckle, whose inspiration came from the earlist Panerai watches. The legendary story of Panerai began in the first Radiomir watch ordered by Italian Royal Navy in 1938. Panerai reproduced this watch in the late 1990s to satisfy watch fans, to supply outstanding and eye-catching watches for them.

Black Seal 8 Days Caliber OP XIV
Black Seal 8 Days Caliber OP XIV

Panerai first launched Radiomir re-edition in 1997, the watch was limited to 60 pieces and built in Platinum, it equipped with vintage Rolex movement. This watch became the favorite of collectors, sold at a very high price in international auction. The excellence of Radiomir 8 Days was its extremely superior mechanical movement. Manual-winding Panerai OP XIV, based on JLC 1877 movement, power reserve was up to 8 days, which was the standard power reserve of modern top watches. The movement surface had Côtes de Genève decoration, the polished blued steel screws made it show a better texture. Different to other watches, the power reserve indicator of this watch was set on the bridge of the movement, you could view from the transparent sapphire case back.

Black Seal 8 Days Stainless Steel

Black Seal 8 Days Stainless Steel

The dial of Radiomir 8 Days adopted the same watch-making technology that was also used by early Panerai watches, it was a three layered structure, including two overlapping disks. The top disk had holes, the disk below was coated with luminescent painting. Small seconds dial followed Panerai tradition, at 9 o’clock.

Radiomir GMT

Elegant, outstanding, pratical. GMT added new style to Panerai Radiomir. The 42mm case followed the beautiful design of Radiomir GMT Alarm, set crown both at 2 and 4 o’clock. (GMT is the abbreviation of Greenwich Mean Time)

Radiomir GMT

Radiomir GMT

The watch canceled GMT Alarm function and adjusted the configuration of GMT displaying to achive the best effect. The gmt hand rotated once every 24 hours, the rotating flange around the dial was divided into 24 hours. Pressing the crown at 2 could put forward one hour, “GMT” letters were also engraved there for you to identify. Pressing the crown at 4 to adjust time and date, it also controlled the winding. If the watch rested for a long time, to ensure a normal operation, you’d better wind it first before self-winding was active. This avoided the situation that spring couldn’t supply enough power to drive the balance wheel to work accurately.

Officine Panerai organized the rare movements in history and equipped them in Radiomir. GMT was exactly one of the complex models. The unique cushion-shaped case of Radiomir was also used in other movements that had technical significance, including the rare tourbillon models.

Radiomir GMT Modified From Radiomir GMT Alarm

Radiomir GMT Modified From Radiomir GMT Alarm

The major innovation of Radiomir GMT was the Panerai OP XIII that was based on Jaeger-leCoultre movement. Black dial followed Panerai tradition, at 9 o’clock, there was small seconds subdial. Stick and Arabic numerous hour markers left space for the date window at 3. Radiomir GMT was water resistant to 100 metres. Two screw-down crowns and case back had solid gaskets, which guaranteed watch’s waterproofing.

Radiomir 45mm Black Seal

Panerai Radiomir Black Seal aroused people’s memory of Italian Navy Gamma force in the World War II. Its members drove SLC(Siluri a Lenta Corsa), or Maiali or even called Black Seal to fightly bravely and became the legends. Radiomir Black Seal Stainless Steel manual-winding model was first launched by Panerai in 2004, until now, it still was the favorite of many watch fans. Classic appearance and historical details were full of Panerai spirit. At 2007 SIHH, Panerai introduced Radiomir Black Seal self-winding stainless steel and manual-winding ceramic to the public.

Black Seal was the masterpiece to praise the Radiomir modles that were made in the 1930s. Unique structure and perfect case design, full of modern sense, so fashion and charming. Panerai Radiomir watch used wire lugs to link leather strap with cushion-shaped case. It was the watch that fully reflected Panerai’s superior technology, smooth lines conveyed elegant texture and highlighted beautiful modern appearance. The design of Radiomir imitated the first watch which Panerai made for Italian Royal Navy in 1938, it was also a watch that was full of historic significance. The biggest feature was its case structure, screw-down crown and case back ensured high waterproofing. Radiomir luminescence, which was made of ZnS, New Th and Radium bromide, could give the dial a high visibility even in the harsh environment.

PAM249 – Blued Steel Hands

The main attraction of PAM249, wasn’t the movement but the dial. The dial, combined Roman and Arabic numbers, known as California Dial. This name wasn’t being widely used until the 80s. However, Roman and Arabic combinations appeared in the early 1930s, Rolex used this design.

New Officine Panerai Factory in Pierre-à-Bot Neuchâtel

After the completion of the watchmaking workshop in Neuchâtel, ten years later, Officine Panerai announced that its new factory will be put into use. The development of watches and movements, production and assembly will be transfered to the new factory. The new production facilities will be put into operation in Pierre-à-Bot in the end of 2013. The construction of the new factory will further improve the progress of Panerai, as a leading high quality sports watch manufacturer that originates from Florence.

The new factory will improve production in quantity and quality. The development, manufacture, assembly and quality control stages that have been carried out by Panerai are scattered in different production bases. The concentrating of various stages in one place will bring several advantages for production: higher production capacity, greater independence of each stage and better quality control.

Panerai new factory covers an area of 10,000 square meters, emoloys 290 workers, is much larger than its Neuchâtel factory, which only has 160 staffs. Not only the production line will be assembled with the latest technology, the new factory will set space areas for design, production, assembly and quality control of Panerai watch components, movements and cases. They are all completed by highly skilled watchmakers.

The new building will create a large space that is dedicated to creative design and conduct of all research and development activities. Over the years, Panerai’s innovation has been left behind, this will improve the situation. Research on materials, design of the new movements, the improvement of product quality and creativity, they are all the basic standards which Panerai accumulated from its military background, so that they can meet the strict requirements of customers.

The CEO of Officine Panerai Angelo Bonati said, “The great adventure started from 1997 creates the future development for Panerai and becomes a permanent basis.”

Through recycling technologies and recycling of resources, the new factory will reduce emissions and insist in ecological sustainable development policy, to create carbon dioxide zero-emission environment for employees.

Mare Nostrum was only officially published after 50 years and was introduced to the consumer market in 1993. The Mare Nostrum bid at Christie auction was prototype in 1943, its historical significance makes it more valuable.

“The opening of Bangkok store firmed the determination which company will widely extend the retail network to the Southeast Asian market.”, Bonati said.

The interior design of the store reflects brand’s whole elements, like other Panerai boutiques, it embodies simplicity and classic, with a strong Italian flavor. To commemorate the historic root between Panerai and the Italian Royal Navy, the structure and materials are all related to the sea world. The materials are carefully selected, whose inspiration comes from the history and DNA of Florentine watch brand.
